Discounts

There are several types of discounts available to senior citizens. Some of the most significant include discounts from drug stores and discount cards.

Drug Store Discounts

Certain drug stores offer special discounts for adults above the age of 60 who want additional medical coverage. One such program helps cover vision, dental and hearing care in addition to prescriptions. It also allows multiple seniors in the same household to share the same pass. Discounts offered through drug stores are not a type of insurance; they are generally passes that offer additional discounts. They also are not available to all seniors; for example, seniors on Medicare or Medicaid may be excluded.

Medicare Drug Discount Card

For those who have Medicare but who don’t have prescription coverage through Medicaid there is a Drug Discount Card available. These cards are good through the end of the year because Medicare starts a new drug benefit program each year. There are several discount cards that are approved by Medicare, and they help patients pay for outpatient prescription costs. In order to see if a certain card is approved by Medicare, look for the Medicare seal that is pictured on them. These discount cards are good for only one person, not for a family. Some of the websites dedicated to helping seniors use the internet have specific areas that help them enroll for Medicare drug cards.

Medicare Prescription Assistance Programs

There are also special prescription assistance programs for people on Medicare. Although these programs don’t necessarily offer access to all prescription drugs, they offer discounted rates on many of the more common ones. There is often a flat rate charged for a month-long supply of approved medicines.

Discount Programs

Discounts programs are available to people whether or not they are on Medicare. Many pharmaceutical companies offer their own discounts to those in need. Some offer programs based on family income and programs especially for people suffering from specific problems.

General Help

There are websites dedicated to helping seniors and other needy people find the best discount for them. These sites generally don’t have their own prescription service plans; instead, they provide a directory of medications and where they can be found for discounted prices. They also provide a wealth of additional information on healthcare and discounts on prescription medicine.
